WVFC Hosts Firefighter Survival Class |
|
2008-08-17 - The WVFC recently hosted a 16 hour Firefighter Survival Class through Bucks County Community College taught by City of Reading career firefighters Jeremy Searfoss and James Lerch, Scranton career firefighter Jared Judge, and Pottsville firefighter Todd Setlock.
The primary purpose of the class was teach firefighters the techniques for methods of escape if put in a life or death situation. Members from Womelsdorf, Rehrersburg, and Bernville participated in the class.
The class consisted of 4 hours of classroom lecture at Station 47 which went over preventing injuries and death, radio procedures, emergency SCBA procedures, rapid search techniques, and may-days. The next 4 hours consisted of maze training at the Berks County Fire Training Site where firefighters were taught reduced profiles with SCBA and entanglement procedures. The last 8 hours consisted of learning the proper ways to perform low window escapes, rope slides, window jumps, and ladder escapes.
The WVFC would like to thank all the instructors and everyone who participated. |

Do you need a pool filled? If so, let the fire company do it. |
|
2008-08-01 - The Womelsdorf Volunteer Fire Company is again filling pools. A load of water equals 2500 gallons. Residents in Womelsdorf Borough are asked for a minimum donation of $50.00 per load. Residents in any other municipalities are asked for a minimum donation of $75.00 a load. This is a great way to help your local fire company raise much needing funding and at the same time we can help cool you down for the summer. To schedule a pool fill, you can call the firehouse at 610-589-4645 and leave your name and phone number stating you would like a pool filled and a member will call you back. |

Fire Company Awarded $38,000 FEMA Grant--3rd Grant in a Row in 3 Years |
|
2008-08-01 - On Wednesday July 16, the Womelsdorf Volunteer Fire Company received notification from our 17th District Congressman Tim Holden that our 2008 FEMA/Assistance to Firefighters Grant application was approved and we have been awarded a $38,000.00 grant in Round 3 of the FEMA/AFG grant program. As part of the grant program, the fire company is required to contribute another 5% towards the award or $2000.00 for a total project cost of $40,000.00. The 5% matching requirement will come from our general account which is comprised from donations, our yearly fund drive, and fund raisers held throughout the year.
This grant will be used to purchase a complete air-fill system which will include a 13-14CFM compressor, NFPA/OSHA compliant 2-position fill station, and DOT 6000 PSI storage cylinders. The complete air-fill system will enable our fire company to fill our SCBA and cylinders after emergency incidents and training rather than depending on neighboring fire companies. This will allow our volunteers to conduct more in-house training while breathing air, making training more realistic.
The FEMA/Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program is a very highly competitive grant program with only about 25% of the applications submitted getting funded. These awards aim to enhance response capabilities and to more effectively protect the health and safety of the public with respect to fire and other hazards. The grants enable local fire departments and emergency medical services organizations to purchase or receive training, conduct first responder health and safety programs, and buy equipment and response vehicles.
For 2008, the fire company was able to submit two applications to the grant program and we are still waiting to hear about a regional application with a $32,805.00 project cost that was submitted on behalf of the WVFC, the Robesonia Fire Co. and the Newmanstown Vol. Fire Company. This grant is to purchase permanent storz hydrant adapters to place on all public and private hydrants in each company's coverage areas.
The Womelsdorf Volunteer Fire Company has been very successful with the FEMA/Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program, receiving four grants in 2003, 2006, 2007, and now in 2008. The awards have totaled $205,775.00! The fire company has been able to purchase new SCBA, portable and mobile radios, a thermal imaging camera, firefighting equipment such as turnout gear, helmets, gloves, and boots, Rapid Intervention team equipment, a vehicle exhaust extraction system, a washer/extractor, and this year a complete air-fill system.
