OLDEST RETIRED WVFC MEMBER PASSES AWAY

Last week, the WVFC lost its oldest retired member as Jay Miller passed away. Jay had served in several capacities including firefighter, driver and secretary during his time with the fire company. He joined at age 18 in 1951 and retired from the fire service in 1986. He was also building committee chairman for the current firehouse at 5th and High Streets.

On Monday members of the WVFC assisted with celebrating the life of Jay with a ladder arch and procession from the Womelsdorf Masonic Lodge to the Womelsdorf Union Cemetery where he was laid to rest.

Jay F. Miller, 94, of Womelsdorf, passed away in the morning hours Tuesday, June 4, 2024, in St. Joseph Medical Center.
He was the husband of Nancy L. (née Klopp) Miller.

Born Monday, February 17, 1930, in Womelsdorf, he was a son of the late Frank A. & Cora E. (née Hostetter) Miller.

He and his family were the owners and operators of the former Central Garage, Womelsdorf, for 48 years.

A member of Trinity Evangelical Fellowship Church, Womelsdorf, since 1943, he was a Volunteer Fireman for 34 years; a Charter Member of the former Womelsdorf Optimist Club; a member of Williamson Lodge #307 F&AM, Womelsdorf; Valley of Reading Scottish Rite; Rajah Shrine; former President of the Union Cemetery Association of Womelsdorf; Robesonia Senior Neighborhood Center; Berks Encore; Loyal Order of Moose; former member of Conrad Weiser Rotary; Western Berks Fire Zone; AAA Reading Berks since 1946; ECC Retirement Village Aux.; PA Sports Hall of Fame-Berks Chapter; and was a Life Member of: Womelsdorf Volunteer Fire Company, Womelsdorf Rod & Gun, Max Schaeffer Post 6558 VFW, Womelsdorf, Pioneer Hose, Robesonia, Goodwill Fire Company, Muhlenberg, Marion Township Rod & Gun, and the Tulpehocken Settlement Historical Society.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children: Ronald J. Miller (Anne Dzamba), Brian H. Miller (Holly J.), Sharon K. Callie (Ramon), Linda J. Miller, and Brenda L. Conlon (Thomas V. Sr.); nine grandchildren; fourteen great grandchildren; and by his brothers: Sterling L. Miller & W. Clair Miller.  

He was predeceased by his sisters: Arlene M. Noll and June C. Hatt; and by his great grandson: Ashton Jay Sensenig.

Funeral Services will be held Monday, June 10, 2024, at 2 PM, from the Hall of Williamson Lodge #307 F&AM, 318 S. Mill Road, Womelsdorf, PA  19567, with the Rev. Paul D. Hansen, officiating.  Burial will follow in Womelsdorf Union Cemetery.  Relatives and friends may call Sunday, June 9, 2024 from 3-6 PM and Monday, June 10, 2024, from 1 pm until time of service at the Hall of Williamson Lodge #307.  Masonic service will be Sunday at 6 PM.
