September 8, 2023

Today at 1349 hours, the WVFC along with Rescue 34 (Newmanstown), Rescue 31 (Keystone of Myerstown) and EMS from Newmanstown and Western Berks were dispatched for the rescue assignment to 16 Westview Terrace in Womelsdorf for a subject down an embankment.

Deputy 47 arrived on scene establishing ’Womelsdorf Command’ and upon investigating found a vehicle accident where a vehicle ended up behind a home and down an approximate 75ft. embankment into a wooded area. The driver was self-extricated upon arrival and appeared to have suffered a medical emergency. It’s unknown when the crash occurred and how long the subject had been outside.

Upon the arrival of Engine and Attack 47 and Rescue 34, crews set up a 3:1 haul system utilizing rope rescue equipment from the WVFC and a member’s personal truck as an anchor point. Members had to utilize a chainsaw to remove brush and branches for access. Once the victim was loaded into a stokes basket, personnel were able to bring the subject safely to ground level.

The subject was extricated within 10 minutes of the arrival of FD and transported to a local hospital for treatment and Rescue 31 was cancelled. FD volunteers stood by until the tow company was able to remove the vehicle from the woods.
