FIRST DUE FIRE IN WOMELSDORF

On Wednesday, March 15 shortly before 10pm, firefighters from Womelsdorf and surrounding communities were dispatched to 161 W. High St. for a house fire.

Deputy 47 was advised by Berks DES they received several calls reporting fire on the roof of a home and the occupant refusing to leave the home attempting to extinguish the fire. Deputy 47 arrived on scene and confirmed fire showing from the roof line and established "Womelsdorf Command".

Ladder 47 arrived first, shortly followed by Engine 47 with Newmanstown Engine 34 establishing a water supply from a nearby hydrant. Two 1 3/4" lines were put in service and were able to quickly extinguish the fire. The resident suffered a minor burn and was treated by Western Berks EMS and refused to be transported to a hospital. The damage was contained to the attic and chimney area. Myerstown Truck 31 took the rear and assisted with roof operations while Engine 52 and Engine 26 provided manpower and Richland took the RIT assignment.

The resident was able to return to the home. The fire, which started around a defective chimney, was ruled accidental. A damage estimate was unavailable. There were no firefighters injured.
